How worn is too worn?

As a wear and tear item, all tyres at some point will require replacing. A reduction in tyre tread affects the ability of your vehicle to brake and corner effectively. The recommendation by the Royal Society For Prevention of Accidents is that tyres are replaced when they reach the 3mm point of wear. The legal limit is 1.6mm across the circumference of the tyre. Below 3mm it takes longer for your vehicle to stop, particularly in wet conditions.

How to check your tyre treads

The depth of tread on your tyres is very important for the safety of your vehicle because it is the only part of the vehicle that grips the road. Driving with low tread depth increases the potential for tyre failure and aquaplaning. In particular, low tread depth in winter weather conditions can severely reduce grip and control.

A quick and easy way to check the tread on your tyres is to check the tread wear indicators which are moulded into the base of the main grooves. When the tread surface is worn to the same level as these indicators, the tyre is at the legal limit of 1.6mm and should be replaced.

If you think your tyres are approaching the legal limit or you have any doubts, bring them into Ithon Tyres and we will check them for you professionally.

Don't forget your tyre pressures

Correct tyre pressures are essential for your safety on the road. Under-inflated tyres are much more likely to suffer a dangerous blowout, typically at high speed on a busy motorway or main road. What's more, properly inflated tyres last longer, help you use less fuel and give you better handling and braking, further reducing your chances of being involved in an accident. has information on how to check your tyre pressures, links to download a free pressure checker app and much more on their website:
